Important Information

We sent home a form for FoodImpact, please return on Monday, November 27th. We will be starting the program on Monday.

We will be starting a building project in the next couple weeks and need a variety of different materials. If you have any of the following materials please send them with your child to school. We really appreciate your help with this!
  • boxes (about the size of a tissue box, cereal box, or
  • pipe cleaners
  • popsicle sticks
  • any recyclables found in your house (nothing bigger than a cereal box)
  • straws
  • tin foil
  • clay
  • any materials that you have around the house that you won't need that would be good for building
Our learning

We had an amazing week of learning this week. We had so much fun exploring the book fair.

Literacy:
  • We read a short excerpt, then charted the simple sentence on the SMART Board. We talked about the subject and predicate parts. The students wrote their own sentence and highlighted the “who/ what” section of the sentence (subject) and the “doing/describing” (predicate) part of the sentence.
  • We learned about how we can add details to our writing and we also introduced the concept of punctuation, specifically periods between sentences. We practiced this skill by writing about something from our "Memory Pocket".
  • Next week we will continue to work on adding details to our writing, and will complete some word work activities.
Math:
  • The grade ones have been continuing to practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We also practiced counting backwards and counting by starting and stopping at any number between 1 and 100 (e.g. start at 57, stop at 62). We also practiced our estimation skills and practiced estimating the amount of objects shown in a variety of different pictures.
  • The grade twos practiced skip counting by 20s 25s and 50s and continued to represent numbers up to 1000. They also started to count backwards from 1000 by 5s and 10s. They were introduced to writing numbers in expanded form (e.g. 578 = 500 + 70 + 8).
  • Next week we will continue to practice our data collection skills and transferring that information into a bar graph.
Inquiry:
  • We learned about the difference between malleable and not malleable and drew a chart in our visual journals showing different malleable and non-malleable materials.
  • We watched a video about how marbles are made. We talked about the properties of a marble and what kind of material it is made out of.
  • In Social Studies, we are learning about different communities and compared the difference between an urban community and a rural community. We did a wonderful job drawing an urban area. Ask your child what buildings they included in their urban area.

Thanks for reading!

Important Information

We sent home information for your child's account for Raz- Kids.   The instructions for how to log in should be attached to their username and password.  We did not assign books or levels to each child and this might be something you can work through with your child on the books they should be reading.  If you have any questions or would like to know where your child should start, please email their teacher directly.

Our learning

We had a very short but mighty week!  We continued discussing Diwali (The Festival of Lights) and learned about Metis communities as Nov. 12 - 18 is Metis Week.   Ask you child of some of the symbols of the Metis.

Literacy:
  • We used a picture prompt (a frozen mountain landscape) to build our descriptive writing skills.  Some child used their sense to describe how they might feel if they were inside the picture, while others wrote a story about what might be under the ice.  Ask you child what they wrote about.
  • To help us during the Writer's Workshop we learned about the five finger planner.  Ask you child this planner (HINT: topic, detail, detail, once, feeling)
  • We made an anchor for the task of reading with someone and practiced with reading with a friend today (pictured below)

Math:

  • The grade ones and twos are strengthening their understanding of skip counting.  Grade ones are working towards counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s and the grade twos have moved to skip counting by 20s, 25s, and 50s.
  • We are also continuing to build our knowledge of representing and describing a variety of numbers to build our number sense.
  • During the last few weeks, we are learning about different ways of counting (ex. groups of ten, fives, subtilizing, etc.)

Inquiry:

  • We are diving into learning about matter
  • This week we discussed what makes an object an "object" and how everything is made of matter.
  • We learned about manufactured object and natural objects and their differences.
  • The students were very excited to learn about how things are made.  Ask you child how tires, pencils or utensils are made.
  • In Social Studies, we are learning about different communities and introduced the term rural by drawing and labelling a rural landscape.

Thanks for reading!

Our Learning:

We had a short, but exciting week this week! We did an amazing job showing our listening jobs during our Remembrance Day assembly.

Literacy:
  • We continued to focus on writing a clear sentence. This week, we wrote a sentence about snacks and practiced using possessive s'. (E.g. Kate wanted Tom's grapes.)
  • We read a variety of books about Remembrance Day and wrote about what we will remember to honour this day.
  • We have been reading "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown as our read aloud. Ask your child what has happened in the book so far.

  • In math, we collected information by asking learners in our class if they would rather live in an amusement park or a zoo. We used this information to create a bar graph.
  • We played a game to practice counting tally marks.

  • In science, we read “The Three Little Pigs” and talked about the properties of straw, brick, and sticks.

There is going to be a Remembrance Day assembly on Wednesday Nov. 8th.  Your child is welcome to bring a donation for the Veterans' Food Bank.

Jacket Racket:  Jacket Racket is beginning on Monday.  Your child can bring any gently used winter clothing (ie. coats, gloves, hats, etc.) to be donated to children across the city.

Our Learning:

In your child's communication they should have received their Gmail (@educbe.ca) and their password (we have reset all passwords). They will use this to access our Google Classroom as we are working on putting in some links that you can use at home.  We will let you know when it is ready to use.

We had a beautiful assembly today to honour the incredible Ms. Coulson in winning the inaugural YYC Music Educator of the year.  The Bowness Jazz even performed!

Literacy:

  • We continued working our targeted literacy groups.   Ask your child the skills that are learning in their group (ex. letter sounds, digraphs, vowel teams, prefixes, etc.)
  • On Monday we really focused on writing a clear sentence and how each of our sentences need a who (subject) and a doing (predicate)
  • We then wrote a complete sentence with a capital only at the beginning and period at the end.
  • In continuing our work around making our writing more interesting we discussed adding interesting details.
  • Ask your child what the magic words are (HINT: When, If, Sometimes, Once)

Math:

  • In math we are strengthening our understanding of representing numbers.  For grade ones they need to understand and represent numbers to 100 and grade twos to 1000. Ask you child to skip count for you by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
  • We have also begun building knowledge of skip counting and using that knowledge to solve problems.
  • We will continue working on skip counting and patterns within the 100 chart next week.

Inquiry:

  • As we are working through the Matter unit in science we continued to compare objects by length, mass and flat space (area)
  • This week we made predictions then compared objects around the room and then documented our findings.
  • Ask your child what we used to compare (Hint: string, blocks, etc.)
  • Next week we are moving into the different properties for a variety of materials.
