Friday, June 21st

 Hello Families!

Important Dates:

Spirit Days:
June 26th - Wear Red and White (Sports Day)

June 27th - Last Day of School (dismissal at noon)
June 28th - Non- Instructional Day (No school)

*Please note that your child will be packing everything up from their classroom next week to bring things back home. Please have your child come to the last day of school (June 27th) with an extra bag to put their stuff in.

Our Learning:

Literacy:
  • We continued with our literacy routines, such as printing practice, word work, daily 5, and writers' workshop.
  • In writing, we took a trip down memory lane and reflected on all the things we did this school year! Ask your child what their most memorable part of this school year was and some things they were proud of.
  • We also continued to read stories and worked on summarizing a story by writing and illustrating the beginning, middle, and end.

Math:
  • In grade 1 and grade 2, we introduced Cycles in the calendar and how to measure time. We did some estimation on how long (seconds, minutes, or hours) it would take from one point to another - we did some walking around the school to see how long it takes to leave and come back to our classroom!
  • We learned how many days are in a week and in a month and used our math skills to understand and measure how many days/months it takes to get from one day to another day or one month to another month.
  • We learned a fun song to remember the days of the week and which day comes before and after. Ask your child to recite the song to you!
Inquiry:
  • This week marked the start of the summer solstice (hopefully no more chilly days!) We connected our learning of the solstice to Indigenous peoples and their culture and learned the significance it holds to their people.
  • We learned the importance of connecting with the land through one last coulee walk and did some sketching outside.
  • We also watched some videos to honour Indigenous People's Day and drew the Medicine Wheel in our journals to write and illustrate the significance of the 4 directions. Ask your child what they love most about connecting with nature and the importance of learning on the land.

  • In grade 1, we created a measurement garden using our background knowledge to use non-standard units to measure our garden and items in the classroom.
  • We also introduced the concepts of capacity and area and listed and tested objects around the classroom to see how many items can these objects in our classroom hold.

Inquiry:
  • A lot of inquiry this week was preparing for our Coulee school celebration today so stay tuned....

We had such a busy and exhilarating time during Coulee school this week!  We spent time each day in the Coulee where some of our time was spent in our sit spots, journalling, practicing measuring in nature, learning about a food web with the grade 3 and 4s, Monet art with Mr. Kelly and strengthening our understanding of the Holistic Learning Framework as we explored Spirit to Be, Heart to Belong, Body to Do and Mind to Know.  Ask your child about their favourite memory of Coulee school.

We would like to invite you to our Celebration of Learning on June 14th to further demonstrate all our learning during this week.  This will be an open house style of event, where families can come in and see work from their children and see the full scope of learning across Kindergarten to grade 4. There will also be a digital component that all families can engage with designed for you to visit the coulee area with your child!

We look forward to seeing you then!
